Portraits [in]justice

Portraits [in]justice features the photography of UW graduate student Jeminie Shell who, during the summer of 2008, was immersed in the politics, culture, and chaos of post-war Liberia. She spent nine weeks in the capital city and traveled into the country's rural areas as an intern with DUCOR Waste Management, an organization that works to improve the poor environmental health conditions contributing to Liberia's horrible health and mortality statistics.

Jeminie's portraits reveal the beauty and resilience of the poorest populations of Liberia as they face day-to-day social and environmental injustices and work to slowly improve their lives in post-war Liberia.

All profits from the sale of photos from this exhibit will be donated to the Niapele Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to sustainable development projects empowering former refugee women and children in Liberia.

The exhibit will be open through March 31st. KEAG Gallery is open Thursday through Saturday, noon to 5:30 and by appointment.

This exhibit is sponsored by University of Wyoming’s International Studies Department, the Social Justice Research Center, and KEAG Gallery. The summer internship was made possible by DUCOR Waste Management; Hunt Alternatives Fund; Dick and Lynne Cheney Fellowship for Excellence in Study Abroad; The Social Justice Research Center at University of Wyoming; The Haub School ENR Plummer Scholarship; and the Office of the President at the University of Wyoming.
