World Refugee Day 2009!

Each year since 2001, the world honors the millions of forcibly displaced people accross the globe by celebrating World Refugee Day on June 20th.

Through our work with war-affected populations in West Africa - in particular Liberian refugees in Ghana - we are keenly aware, as an organization and as individuals, of the extreme difficulty of maintaining livelihoods under circumstances of displacement. Refugees and displaced people often have to completely rebuild their lives, following periods of uncertainty and disruption, and the challenges they face at every stage of displacement - from the initial dislocation to the long-anticipated return home or resettlement - are daunting.

The Niapele Project is currently working with its partners in Liberia to enable returnees, as well as internally displaced people and refugees, to rebuild their lives, their homes and their country. Alongside other NGOs and government partners, we focus our efforts on assisting grassroots organizations and their leaders in addressing pressing social and economic development issues. Because they often bear the most hardship, our efforts are concentrated on initiatives that benefit the most vulnerable children - through the economic empowerment of their parents and communities, by providing direct services or through our advocacy efforts.

The current crisis in the Swat Valley of Pakistan has displaced three million people - the most severe displacement crisis in the country since partition from India in 1957 - Read a NY Times feature on the refugee situation in Pakistan, "Pakistan's "Invisible Refugees" Burden Cities"
